5 Foods that are beneficial to your teeth

Whether you are about to work with our smile designers to create your alignment plan, or if you have already used our aligners and have your Swanky Smiles, we want all our patients (potential, present and post) to have the resources they need to keep those chompers bright and beautiful! When it comes to the health of your teeth, making sure that you are eating foods and drinking beverages that help your teeth live their best life is very important. You also need to know what to stay away from – but we’ll discuss that in a future blog!

To get you started on the journey to eating healthy foods that are beneficial to your teeth, we have created a list of 5 foods that are beneficial to your teeth. Read on and keep your teeth strong!

  • Cheese

Cheese is a favorite for most people, so if you are one of those people we know you are already excited about this one! A study published in the May/June 2013 issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the American Academy of General Dentistry, reported at EurekAlert! found that eating cheese raised the pH in the subjects’ mouths and lowered their risk of tooth decay. It’s thought that the chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva in the mouth. Cheese also contains calcium and protein, nutrients that strengthen tooth enamel. Sounds like a pretty scrumptious way to keep those pearly whites their brightest!

  • Yogurt

Yogurt is high in calcium and protein and this contributes to the strength and overall health of your teeth. The probiotics in the yogurt contain good bacteria that will crowd out the bacteria that cause cavities in your teeth (ouch!). While all yogurts may be yummy to consider, make sure you are choosing the ones that have no added sugar to ensure the healthiest treat for your teeth and gums!

  • Leafy Greens

“Going Green” is not just a good idea for being economical and caring for our environment, it is also a fantastic concept for caring for our teeth. Chock full of vitamins and minerals and low in calories, leafy greens are a great addition to many different types of meals but are also great to eat by themselves. Much the favorites, Kale and Spinach are common staples in a healthy diet by providing a healthy dose of calcium, folic acid and vitamin B. For those of you who may not be too keen on inviting the Greens into your home, try sneaking them into a smoothie with sweet healthy ingredients that will mask the flavor but still allow you to consume their leafy green goodness!

  • Carrots

For those of you looking for something with a crunchy texture, maybe as alternative to other snacks like chips, Carrots will serve up that crunch-crunch that you’ve been fiending for! Eating a handful of raw carrots at the end of the meal also increases saliva production in your mouth, which rinses away the bacteria and food particles. The fibrous texture of carrots also stimulates your gums, much like brushing your teeth does, and while it doesn’t take the place of a good brushing routine, it can tide you over between meals if you can’t get to your toothbrush.

  • Apples

A great way to transition away from candy and other sugar-y treats, but still find the sweetness you crave, is keep apples on hand. Along with being sweet and tasty, they are also high in fiber and water. Much like the carrots, apples are also a great way to clean your teeth after a meal when you don’t have your toothbrush within reach. They are easy to take on-the-go and they are also quite pretty to keep in a basket in your kitchen.
